Reflections on Euromnis: Matthew Backhouse

Matthew Backhouse - 13 Nov 2025

I recently had the privilege to travel with part of the team at Logical Developments to the Euromnis conference, which was held in the Dutch city of Arnhem.

Euromnis was four days packed to the rafters with presentations about software engineering in Omnis Studio, covering a broad range of topics including time zones, data backups, and error handling. Attending these sessions enabled me to develop my skills as a programmer by giving me experiences and ideas outside of my usual work.

My favourite sessions were the ones on developer tools to make my job faster and more efficient. Tools such as GitTools and OmnisTAP will allow me to build on my existing foundation of programming knowledge to apply line based version control and software testing to my current role using Omnis Studio. Euromnis wasn’t just about sharing knowledge, it was also about sharing tools to help the entire community.

Another important component of Euromnis was the community interaction. I had great conversations with a few developers, even going beyond Omnis Studio. I spoke about game development (a personal hobby of mine) and music. It added a human element to the people I otherwise only knew through the computer. Because of my time at Euromnis I was able to speak with the right people to join the community mailing list. It’s a valuable resource for getting developer support beyond my team in the office.

While work was the primary goal of the trip, there were a couple days for sightseeing afterwards. I had the opportunity to visit the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam and learn more about the Dutch East India trading company, and the Batavia shipwreck (see https://www.logicaldevelopments.com.au/news/logical-developments-brings-dutch-colonial-archives-to-life). This trip was my first time visiting Europe, and my second travelling overseas, so was more than just learning about computers.

Overall I found Euromnis was a valuable experience that allowed me to extend my knowledge and make friends within the community.
